Denali National Park Fun Facts

Denali was referred to as Mount McKinley from 1896-1975. In 1975 Alaska requested that the mountain be officially recognized as Denali but was blocked by congressional delegates from Ohio. In 2015 President Obama made the name change to Denali officially.

Denali National Park and Reserve have 39 species of mammals, 169 species of birds, and over 1,500 species of plants. However, many visitors come to see what is referred to as the big five of wildlife: Dall sheep, moose, caribou, wolves, and grizzly bears.

Denali is the tallest peak in North America at 20,310 feet and the first successful climb to the top happened in 1913.
