The Hanalei River was designated an American Heritage River by US President Bill Clinton on July 30, 1998.

The historic Hanalei Pier is a favorite spot for locals to fish, swim and play music. Built-in 1892 with an overall length of 1,000 feet it has been a gathering place not only during its time but also now as well!

Hanalei can also be translated as lei valley which is referring to the rainbows that color the valley and surround Hanalei like a wreath.
