Imagine a flat, arid landscape so remote you can't even see the curvature of your own planet. Devoid of all life and dotted only by strange vehicles thundering across an endless white plain that seems to go on forever in every direction. This is Bonneville Salt Flats. Utah's most famous landmark and an incredible place to visit in a campervan rental.
If you're traveling along I-80, be sure to stop at the rest area for a view that is both impressive and striking. The flat land will seem like it's underwater as mirages cover up all of its rolling hillsides with their lush vegetation popping out here and there in contrast; this desert scene is a must see during your campervan adventure.
The Salt Flats extend over 47 square miles and lie at an elevation of 4218 feet above sea level.
The salt crust is nearly five feet thick in the center, tapering off to less than one inch at its edge. It's all table salt!
The last ice age gave birth to this massive lake, whose shores were almost 1000 feet deep where Flats are today.
