The park also offers many opportunities to get outside: whitewater rafting on some of America's best rivers; technical climbing at one of only two walled granite complexes in North America where you can scale rocks that tower over 1000ft high or hike hundreds of miles without seeing another person.

New River Gorge National Park and Preserve was established in 1978 as a national river and redesignated in 2020 as a national park and preserve that stretches for 53 miles from just downstream of Hinton to Hawks Nest State Park near Ansted.
The park is made up of more than 70,000 acres with 1,400 species of plants from around the world.
President Jimmy Carter signed legislation establishing New River Gorge National River on November 10, 1978.
